As said, a trip to Myanmar won't be complete without seeing the
Shwedagon Pagoda, the grandest Buddhist structure in Myanmar. It's the Burmese version of an
Eiffel Tower or
Taj Mahal in Yangon because it truly stands above the rest. it. With its size, color, and charm, seeing it up close is an experience you don't want to miss.
Apart from seeing the pagoda's enormous appearance, it's good to know the significance of this place for the Buddhists. Shwedagon Pagoda is the most sacred pagoda in Myanmar. It's said to have important relics of Buddha, including the 8 strands of hair from the head of Gautama.
Tip: I highly suggest to go to the pagoda at 5PM and then stay there until nighttime. It's worth seeing it both daytime and nighttime! Observe how the shade and color of the pagoda change. While it looks so bright and golden in the afternoon, wait until the light comes on at night. It's seems a giant glow stick at night!
Entrance fee is 8,000 kyats (USD 5). You may pay either in kyats or in USD. Tickets can be bought directly at the entrance. After paying, they will put a sticker on your shirt as proof of payment. They give out free brochures with map and description of the structures.
Shwedagon Pagoda is in Dagon district in Yangon. The
Kandawgyi Park is in the same area, which can be a good side trip.

- Taxi from Chinatown: 2,500 kyats (USD 2)
Reminders:
- Remove shoes upon entrance, including socks / stockings
- Wear appropriate outfit (it's a religious place FYI)
- Bring bottled water. Yangon is generally humid especially during summer (March-May)
