How to Reduce the Cost of Travel

Everyone would like to travel as frequently as possible. Alas, there’s usually a pretty big barrier standing in the way: the cost. Unless you’re independently wealthy, then you probably think that your travel options are fairly limited purely because of how expensive it can be to travel around the world! However, while it’s true that you probably can’t stay in five-star hotels for months at a time, there are certainly ways to reduce the cost of travel, which will allow you to do it more frequently. In this blog, we’ll look at some of the most effective ways to keep your travel-related expenses to a minimum.

Volunteer Your Time

Wouldn’t it be nice if you didn’t have to pay for your accommodation or food when you are far away from home? Get rid of those two expenses, and you’ll find that the overall cost of travel shrinks considerably.

And actually, it’s more realistic than you might think. Sites such as Workaway and HelpX allow you to find interesting volunteering experiences around the world. You’ll work for a few hours a day (normally around 3 - 5 hours) and, in exchange, will receive accommodation and board. Plus, it’s not like you’re just working behind a computer screen all day — in most cases, the work is outdoors and inherently interesting. You'll enjoy it!

Slow Travel

Costs can rise significantly if you’re always on the move, always having to book new hotels, and so on. If you can stay in one place for longer, then you’ll reduce your daily expenses considerably. For one thing, if you stay for a month, then you’ll be able to get a good deal on an apartment. The cost per night could be a fifth of what you’d pay for a hotel. You’ll also have the opportunity to make your own food onsite, too.

Make Money As You Go

The problem with travelling often isn’t that it’s expensive. It’s that you’ve got no money flowing into your bank account when you’re doing it. Money is only moving outward. The solution? Find a way to make money while you travel. If you have a computer and an internet connection, then you could earn some money through forex trading. What is forex trading? It’s simply the exchange of foreign currencies. If you can master the basics, then you might just find that you can build a much-needed side income that can fund your travel experiences while you’re on the move.

Do Your Research

Finally, there’s good old internet research. The truth is that there are a million ways to save money on your travels. But all those discounts will not always be so immediately obvious to you. When you’re thinking of visiting a place, spend some time online and find the best deals. You might just find that there’s a cheaper way to do things, especially when it comes to flights. You can usually save money by taking an indirect flight, for example, which would save you hundreds of euros, just like that.

  1. Thanks Shelly for helping us out at all times, since we all like travel but we often do not have the means to do so.
