When in Brunei: Empire Hotel and Country Club

For backpackers, spending time in luxurious hotels isn’t really a thing. But while in Brunei, a 7-star hotel in the capital Bandar Seri Begawan got me all curious about luxury. As I have never set foot on a 7-star establishment, all I wanted on that day was to check it out, even by just going on a day visit.

The Empire Hotel and Country Club is a vast seven-floor hotel located in Jerudong, northwest of Brunei. It consists of at least 300 rooms starting at USD 195 a night. On top of that, there are also at least 47 suites and 16 villas to complement the royal experience.

I never got into any of the rooms, but they surely look majestic based on Internet photos. Actually, this hotel used to be the palace of Prince Jefri, the brother of the King Hassanal Bolkiah. They say that the royal family of Brunei spends time here. Of course the family is provided with the most luxurious suite, which is said to cost as much as USD 23,000 a night! The said suite has its own lap pool inside! Beat that!

The lobby is themed white and gold with high ceilings and huge glass windows. The entire place truly looks grand as expected.
Going outside, there is a huge man-made lagoon that definitely looks calming. My day trip was worth it because of this.

The infinity pool is also huge. It has a relaxing overlooking of the Brunei bay.
Entering the hotel for a day visit is free. Aside from the hotel facilities, there is a cinema, a few restaurants and retail shops inside.
